How to merge complete columns / rows in a table

I have not found how to do the following in writer, not in the french or
english help sections, also not as bug/enhancement in Bugzilla :

I would like to merge two columns of a table so that the merge is done for each
row separately, e.g. :

column1 | column2
A | B
C | D
E | F

should become only one column, but still different rows

column1
A B
C D
E F

However, then the option should also be that this is done for the rows, by
column, giving the following result :
Column 1 | Column 2
A C | B D
E | F

see attached file of this is not clear

If this is already possible, it would be great to have some hint in the help
section of "Merge"

Thanks for considering this

Oliver
