I could compile it with "--without-java --without-doxygen" with Xcode 12.2 on
Big Sur and without modifying the code. There are no changes, the text is still
blurred. I will later try to have a look at the patch:

And by the way: It's unfortunately not very beginner friendly, I was surprised,
that I could manage to build it. But everything else seems to be a black hole
for me, I have no clue where to start ;)
