I'm happy to say that the Slide Sorter toolbar now contains only one tool,
"Slides Per Row." That's exactly what I asked for; thank you very much.
(The Slide View toolbar also contains Slides Per Row, but that's not a
problem.)
I'm changing the status to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME, as requested.
