On pc Debian x86-64 with master sources updated today, I could reproduce this.
I used gen rendering and enable-symbols (not enable-dbgutil).
I waited about 30/40 seconds after having launched the opening of the file and
there were only 4 or 5 squares in the progress bar (so I suppose less than 5%
?).
