for what it's worth, I'd be all for extending this to other formatting
contexts, too. it may not be necessary for highlighting contexts (except
possibly in case of block cursors?), since that's a feature of the _background_
and not of the text characters themselves. italics just seemed to be one
context (perhaps the only one?) where this issue has _some_ impact on
usability, if only a minor one.
