I removed the period by doing the following:
1. Tools > Chapter Numbering
2. Separator After had a period, which I removed.
3. Save File
4. Reload File
Result: Period before Chapter 1 is gone.
Additional Information.
1. Tools > Chapter Numbering (the period is back again in Separator After,
after reloading, but does not appear in the document)
2. This is a ".doc" file and it is possible that the problem here in an
interaction with the .doc filter.
