I can reproduce this behavior following your steps. Although using a Mac OSX 10.8.2, LibreOffice 4.0.0.3 rc3, that freeze is not THAT big, but it freezes... Because I still can reproduce this wouldn't solve your problem; but is it possible for you to retest with LibreOffice 4.0 (release probably next week), or with current Release Candidate (RC3) to see or there's an improvement on that part. (nevertheless this stays a bug/problem). Following [1] I mark this bug as 'minor medium' (require users not to use some features).
