Setting is available from the 'View' menu, the 'Show Whitespace' command.
Assigned a keyboard accelerator as localized, e.g. <Alt>+V --> <Alt>+E.
And toggling off 'Show Whitespace' coupled with 'View' --> 'Zoom'--> 'Optimal
View' currently eliminates majority of white space from document canvas
showing.
Simply achieved by menu/accelerator/dbl-clicking, so not clear there is benefit
to combining both into a new editing mode to complement 'Normal' or 'Web' or
even 'Full Screen'; but that remains open as bug 37817
