I found the problem.

First I removed then reinstalled Libre Office Writer using the Ubuntu
Software Center.  It reinstalled the same version and exhibited the same
behavior.

In Tools > Options > LibreOfficeWriter > View, the check box under
Display "field codes" was ticked.  Unticking it solved the problem.  

I would think that the most common behavior wanted by users would be to
have this not ticked by default.  That is the condition on all previous
releases I'm familiar with.

Please close the bug at your discretion.
