It reinstalled the same version and exhibited the same behavior. In Tools > Options > LibreOfficeWriter > View, the check box under Display "field codes" was ticked. Unticking it solved the problem. I would think that the most common behavior wanted by users would be to have this not ticked by default. That is the condition on all previous releases I'm familiar with.
