Steve,
the palette does not disappear completely, it is just minimized. You can tell
where it is if you watch your window closely while enabling/disabling the
palette. You may also want to try opening/closing the peroperties palette.
I eventually found the color replacement palette was reduced to a very slim
vertical line to the left or right edge of the drawing area and could drag it
out from there.
