When we apply a list via a list style or via the toolbar, we are applying it directly to the paragraph. Direct formatting has priority over styles. When the numbering is applied via a style, the numbering no longer has priority. You can test this by assigning a list-style to a paragraph-style (like Addressee) and setting a -0.2 left margin to the paragraph style. The -0.2 margin will win out.
