It wasn't clear to me how to determine that the file was not saved as a png. I tried to determine the picture properties by right clicking on the image and selecting Save Graphic. This shows me test.png, but still has "All Formats" listed the bottom right. To see that the file was still actually a JPEG, I navigated to the folder via a terminal and used "file test.png", and it confirmed that it is actually still a JPEG.
