I don't know what fixed the problem but I've been using it for several days now and have not had an issue with this bug. If I have the auto-spell check turned off when I load a document then the processor usage goes to near 0% soon after loading. If the spell check is turned on then 1 core with show high usage until it finally gets done with the spell check but it doesn't seem to cause the program to behave more slowly.
