Okay, I opened the following bug for UI improvements and added you to it:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=147843

I would like to request this bug to remain open for the possibility of
introducing the requisite changes to core and ODF standard since LibreOffice
should have this workflow as it is quicker, more efficient and intuitive for
novice users, and even advanced users from other office suites (that do not
expect different behaviour on something this user-facing).
