In the meanwhile, I discovered that (at least on Gnome Shell) I can use the
"Universal access" hairline zoom feature, which helps a lot.

There is an explanation here: https://askubuntu.com/a/1095983/16395 --- if you
choose a very transparent color for the airline cursor and a default zoom
factor of 1.00, you can then use the keyboard (by default super+alt+8, but you
can change it) to superpose to the mouse cursor a full-screen crossline. 

Clearly not the same thing, because it follows the mouse and not the active
cell, but it's better than nothing on very big sheets.
