I think it may be due to other memory hogs running at the same time. I did not have this issue with 7.1 or earlier versions, but now it seems I need to quit Chrome, Mail, BBEdit, and Terminal. If any of them are running, is see the infinite beachball in LibreOffice. My MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015) has only 4G RAM.
