I too do not understand what's the use of having 2 navigators. Maybe it's a
legacy feature and many users still like to have a floating navigator without
having to undock the entire sidebar for that.

This is weird. I've just tried using gtk3 backend and Ctrl+double-click did
work to dock the navigator to the left.

Make sure you're double-clicking in the right place. It has to be in an empty
position of the navigator.
