Are you sure you use the right tool? If you click it if nothing is selected, it opens a floating window "Fontwork". A screenshot of the tool is attached. It might be, that the icon for that tool is lost in your settings? Please customize your settings again. For example add the tool to the menu "Tools". You find the command "Fontwork" in category "Format". Note, that there exists another tool "Fontwork Shape" with the same icon.
