There is definitely space for improvement in the consistency between Writer and
Impress, including where things are located and how they are named.

- In Writer, the styles are called "AutoFormat Styles" in the toolbar and
dialog, but just (Table) Styles in the Styles sidebar.
- Impress has them in the section "Table Design" of the "Properties" sidebar.

It makes it difficult to locate things when going from one component to the
other. But I guess that's a slightly different problem.

To stick to the topic: table style previews are still not available in Writer's
styles sidebar in LO 7.5, even though there is a "Show previews" setting
underneath. I like the solution by Andreas in comment 3.

Not sure when table styles were introduced, but no preview since at least LO
6.3.
