You need to use a layout with dead keys (letter follows accent).  For example,
to produce the á character in "English US with dead keys" I type the single
quote mark ' (two keys to the right of L on my keyboard) followed by a. When
you hit the dead key LO shows the accent and as soon as you hit the character
to be accented, the accent is replaced by the corresponding accented character.

I am not familiar with the internals of LO but if you could indicate in which
LO module(s) this character-forming is happening, I will attempt a
walk-through.
