Sure - so; when impress has started and just before you trigger the long delay
do:

pidof soffice.bin
<this should print a number: eg. 12345>
gdb
attach <that number from above>
continue

now make impress hang, and then when you like switch to the console and do:

<ctrl>-c
thread apply all backtrace

which should generate the details of exactly what it is getting up to :-) It
may also pay to install the glib2 and gstreamer debuginfo packages to get a
more detailed stack trace there.
