I haven't been able to freeze the application, but I can see that inserting an
image from the web is painfully slow, without any feedback of something
progressing (which could be useful for large files).

There is definitely something that could be done more efficiently, given that
loading the image in a browser is instant (my example is less than 500KB) but
LibreOffice can take 12 seconds, giving the impression it is frozen.

Steps:
1. Open a component (I think this applies to all component that can insert
pictures)
2. Insert > Image > use this URL:
https://www.libreoffice.org/themes/libreofficenew/img/header2.jpg > OK

(Note that on some versions of GNOME, if the file picker only shows the
breadcrumbs, you will have to us Ctrl + L to reveal the address field.)

Tested with:

Version: 7.5.1.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: fcbaee479e84c6cd81291587d2ee68cba099e129
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded
