Bug ID: 154795
Summary: Font selection pane offers choice of "language" -
which isn't.
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 7.5.1.2 release
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: medium
Component: LibreOffice
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
In the Character properties dialog, the Font pane offers the user a choice of
Language. This in itself is already problematic, since language is an aspect of
content, not of style/formatting (bug 151290); and because the choice is
separate for each language group, i.e. the text is either in multiple languages
at once or in none (bug 148257).
But putting that aside, there's another problem: What we are offered are not
quite / not at all languages. For the Western "language group", we can choose,
for example, "English (Israel)" and "English (Denmark)". There are no such
languages, nor are these localized variants of the English language (as one
could claim regarding "English (USA)" vs "English (UK)"). It seems like these
are either keyboard layouts or locales, likely the latter.
But - why would one choose a locale in the Font pane? And - does this setting
have locale-related effects? This seems wrong.
Also, with the inflation of choices, we have a dozen kinds of English which
aren't about a different language - mostly a waste of space, and making it
easier to make choices with misleading/invalid information. Same goes for
Arabic in the RTL/CTL group: 15 different kinds or so.
