You didn't explain how to change to Extending Selection mode, though, so your
steps were lacking.
Steps:
1. Add two paragraphs and change one of them to Heading 1 by pressing Ctrl-1
2. Hover over the status bar at the bottom in Writer until you see the tooltip
"Standard Selection etc." Right-click on it and select Extending Selection
3. In the Navigator sidebar deck, double-click the heading item
I reproduce the issue.
The request seems logical enough that I won't bother the UX team. If we're in
this special selection mode, we want to do special things, so it should not be
dropped.
