It is not possible to specify the tic interval in months or years, only in days
for xy-plots. To make easily readable diagram of time series data where the
time points are not given at regular intervals spanning multiple months/years
you should be able to have tic marks at the 1st,2nd,.. of each month or even
just mark 1st Jan of each year.
