We get habituated to the generic message to the point where it is meaningless. And the average user does not know (or need to know) about the specific differences between formats. If I am working in a xls someone sent me and I see columns up to AMJ, I suppose those are the xls spreadsheet content boundaries. What about not showing the content that would not be saved? -If I am working in a xls file, show up to IV -If I am wirking in a ods or xlsx file, show up to AMJ -If I open a new file, show up to AMJ and data loss message if xls is selected -etc. Another potential solution might be to add a link to the generic message to a page with specific info for the file type selected.
