Thank-you for the help. In fact I eventually found out how to get rid of the
rectangle another way. What I wd like to know is what caused it? I have used 
*** quite a lot in six books now, using Open Office and now Libre Office. What
could have caused it?

You can remove it :
Put the cursor in the paragraph before the black line, then Format > Paragraph,
in the 'border' tab : set no border.

If you don't want borders while typing ***, go to :
Tools > Autocorrect Options, tab 'Option'
unchecked "Apply border".

With this box checked, 3 (or more) hyphens (-), underscore(_), equal sign (=),
asterisks (*), tildes (~) or hash marks (#) following by Enter draw lines after
the pargraph.
