Well I can't get my patch to pass the CI builds and a reviewer confirmed that my code doesn't fix the bug in a way they like so I have abandoned this patch. I'm just an old volunteer debugger so maybe someone else can fix the broken reportdesign code in a way that is satisfactory to LibreOffice CI rules and reviewers. That said, this pattern of code, while ugly, does work and isn't hard to understand but clearly the style is verboten.
