It tells you, that type 1 of search (the default value of the optional third argument of MATCH) tells the function, that the lookup array *is* sorted ascending. And when it is *not* sorted accordingly, when the type is 1 (or missing), it is user's error, and the return value can be anything - user must not expect a meaningful result in this case. We need to add a note about that fact, similar to what we added for VLOOKUP [2]. It is completely unclear what "=MATCH(3: D:D)" in your description might stand for.
