As I initiated Bug 157609 and noting the comments that AVG may be the cause of
the problem, I did the following sequence of actions and results:

Deleted AVG program
Terminated session (PC shut down)
Started new session (PC powered up)
All files opened normally
Downloaded latest version of AVG and installed
All files opened normally
Ran AVG Quick Scan
All files opened normally
Terminated session (PC shut down)
Started new session (PC powered up)
All files opened normally

So appears that problem is solved
