To add to this, there will always be differences of opinion e.g., http://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/3094/footnotes-how-to-get-not-superscripted-numbers-in/ I made a mistake in comment #5 when I said "While a feature could be implemented to provide the option of using superscript identifiers in the footnote itself ..." As indicated in comment #1 and in the link I have just provided it is *already* possible to separately style footnote / endnote identifiers in the text area and footnote area. Workaround: Tools > Footnotes/Endnotes... (or modify the default character styles Footnote Character / Endnote Character).
