Note that the layout spacing and padding is cumulative when not merged--so page layout would jump when the border and shadow are enabled compared to disabled. So the distinction should be noted in documentation. But other than that, I have no problem with changing the default to not enable the border/shadow merge. Despite it having been the default since feature was implemented for OOo.
