In Writer, that "view only for printing" is the mail merge fields. I
don't have a good idea how those are implemented, but I have a basic
working knowledge of how to use Mail Merge. A hard limitation of this
system is that values from different rows in the database are
necessarily on different pages. These fields seem to be something that
is "character level" and inserts itself in the flow of text.
Just a heads-up - this is very much a relational concept. When (IF :-) I
get round to sorting out my MV database, this stores an n-dimensional
array in a "row" so a single row can contain multiple values for a
single column.
