While I'm not thrilled about adding complication to the code to reduce the
potential utility, it is definitely necessary here to be compatible. I
think I'll add a preprocessor directive (off by default) that allows
someone to build without the complication, if they have a use for it. Of
course I'll add comments describing the differences in behavior.
