There's platforms who don't have a JDK (yet) available and *still* need to use gcj-jdk. Which only can do 1.5.: http://www.debian.org/ports/kfreebsd-gnu/ (But that one will get openjdk when wheezy is installed on the Debian builds - so I am told...)
