So where *is* that location then? Links like <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/366728> "LD_LIBRARY_PATH not loading from .profile nor /etc/environment" indicate that setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH in ~/.profile etc. is effectively ignored (which is OK in our case, where we strive for an unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH), but I'm still clueless what causes LD_LIBRARY_PATH to be set for you.
