If you have a caption that's wider than your "formula", either the caption is wrapped (possibly over several lines) to match the width of the formula or the formula is scaled to match the width of the frame containing the formula and the caption. Both of those options look horrible and there is no good workaround! http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=7949 shows an example of this bug.
