Merge cells are defined by virtue of cell attributes. The top left (or top right in case of RTL) merge cell contains the size of the merged area (column x row) while the rest of the cells have "overlapped vertical" or "overlapped horizontal" flag, or both. Grep the code in sc for ATTR_MERGE and ATTR_MERGE_FLAG for how merged cells are handled. Cell attributes are stored with each column. Take a look at ScColumn which has pAttrArray of type ScAttrArray as its member, which is where all cell attributes are stored.
