It's probably easier to get rid of the word entirely, since it's 
loaded with propaganda to begin with, making it:

"Became popular when people started sharing music with each other 
online"

(And the wording still allows that people were sharing with each 
other before doing it online.)

Despite what those against us in the war on sharing would have people 
believe, sharing is good. Given the lack of success with various 
legal and technical measures to prevent sharing, some are instead 
working to change people's attitudes about sharing, trying to 
convince them that it's somehow wrong. One way you can help is by not 
believing the propaganda and not spreading those terms yourself.
