It seems to me that getting media attention became a way to avoid corporate or state covert operations' violence to their full-extent: where the hostile entity cannot use impunity by fear of too much exposition in the media, it tends to temporize its action ; but where media attention lacks, all kinds of exactions are committed--E.g., indigenous tribes in the Amazon forest vs. mining companies, or more recently, what's happening in Peru with the natural gas fields in the "reserved" spaces. Do you think it's a viable strategy for activist groups to build their own communications infrastructure and avoid isolation from the Internet and the media using free software, and eventually free hardware technologies? == hk
