There has been > far to much apathy on the part of developers regarding the ethics > of hosts. I'm not sure that talking about apathy alone demonstrates a real understanding of the problem. Whenever developers do try to host anything ourselves (whether it is email, Git, a blog or a bug tracker) it starts to take away valuable time and a lot of energy. Just because we can get an Apache package from a GNU/Linux distribution doesn't mean that it is the end of the story. Just hosting my own blog, I regularly experience crude DoS attacks and I've had to shut down the comments functionality because I no longer have time or energy to keep investigating anti-spam solutions. Usually I just include a mailing list link in blog posts now and I hope people will discuss things on the appropriate lists. I personally chose to put some projects on Github because I have the freedom to completely clone them elsewhere so I am not completely at the mercy of Github. I usually disable the Github wiki and issue trackers unless I really want to use those things because I don't want too much data tied up in their system. I think the FSF approach (ranking each provider) is a good step but it is not the complete solution. The real solution needs to look at how to encourage free-software-minded sysadmins to volunteer time and energy to run things to the highest standard on the FSF criteria, not just for repository hosting, but for everything else, including email, SIP, XMPP, etc -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1 iQIcBAEBCAAGBQJWTfplAAoJEOm1uwJp1aqD3pEP/inchVT/Wac12brm3p9N5m59 S/uhK80FoH9m3kGGI13Tfk971inenyGa4Epnxg0U3aQp0tTJ4qk3nZzjEJuDWxPh aTX5CCvlvA/AjiFyxoqq3MH+e21N8gpo0FLucLvNKq1IOOp28MP5QaIvhikHkOwb zevRjBxwvbHKROEMk+qmzexrB5ncVNoifhaOBDpr7QxFk9pwUJVmyYukqCVfY1C3 cqK5NKmECzG+iOqIYU48lwUwtnS15X5koneDa8gRIpV3SYJfOWHu18Rr+QfIJwVY Aewi+IWsm9Ww4U6E2LnfkvKKfEyOOUG9lLP8MEgm8y/eg0fV3zvSfWgNHZzWwIL3 BrcpDmkIvnr8NL51MnVM3h2tnlBT1bHY/DbcjZrM7Y39EWR4QJtHEPDN90/f/S6w 474p7bJPwaFSu++6etSelR7wbLPovhi1JWO35PMqMxHIOnfvxHZhL/6r/EN6HIBF 10KXZOyQ8Rn5ZOdfHC1+b3CvyZ8WAAOC1YQrJ9h2xyuyhQ2CPQ0cC6XPuvzvz+UR xBR6b3ZUTOQVon7HMtejLoZVSw6T1tD5EVUK2FPPw4AipfPtDGixiQ5Ashf2H9yG y19/9VdS8kHdYTsoHbUx6VBsZ+IqsWP4n/DbnyWMtHWPz+Vr1OI93odCTbDyUaOR UiVdfkpCuHJPyQdTL/QZ =8OSp -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
