The problem with BitCoin is that it's a separated currency. It doesn't really serve to manage existing currencies. I can't use Electrum BitCoin wallet to manage my Brazilian Reals (I don't have any, but anyways, it's an example). GNU Taler seems to try to solve it, since it doesn't create a currency on its own, but serve as a mere/simple transport agent.
