My husband used a Knoppix CD several times 10-15 years ago to rescue
data files from the computers of friends whose Windows OS had fatally
broken. He hasn't had any requests since then, but it was pretty handy
for file rescue.

<http://knoppix.net>. I haven't used either one of them, but they seem
like good places to start.
