Thanks to those spammers from a couple of weeks back I got kicked off the list. I
missed Digests 941-957 and the archives are not quite up to date. If someone still
has these digests, could you please forward them on to me or provide me with a link to

Subject: Bugger - update Monday

Things just keep on getting depressing...This weekend I managed to
(a) get a complete bios back into Rob's machine
(b) installed my old 3.2 disc, formatted and with the W95 cabs on it
(c) installed W95 actually *on* the lib
(d) ran the machine through a couple of scan disks and boots and restarts
(e) ran it all night on screen-saver (amazing how horrible the flowerbox is
in 16 colours)
(f) watched it crash never to return when it came out of screensaver AAARGH!

I increasingly believe that *my* screen is toasting the *video* chip on the
mother board...crashes seem to occur not randomly but when the screen is
doing something complicated - e.g. when thething tries to load it initially,
when it changes mode to go into windows, after screensave...also, although
windows correctly identified the graphics chip, it wouldn't respond
correctly and complained about wrong drivers...and failed properly to
upgrade them...also insisted only 4 or 8 bit graphics was available.

I suspect the reason that the bios won't always load properly is that the
machine isn't running long enough to complete the load.

Bugger!

Neil (looking forward to a holiday)

Hi, I'm new to the list, but I hope you can help, I'm in the UK and have
been trying to get hold of a libretto for some time now, the problem is that
they have been discontinued for a while here and nobody seems to import
them.
Please, if anybody out there can help I would be very grateful.
Cheers,
Credo.

If that is the case, how does it work with an external monitor, which of
course blanks the TFT?

Erm, I haven't tried that on the grounds that the video output still
requires the video chip...but I will...

Neil;

Is it possible that you are not loading the correct video/other driver.
I don't think that the Win98 drivers will function correctly,
with the win95 system. Here in the states Toshiba has taken to
hiding the older drivers, as of lately.

Neil,

Did you add the updated drivers to the machine after
reinstalling W95? I recall the original drivers
causing a bunch of crashes in Windows. This was one
of the first updates I made after buying the thing.

Felix (Greg?),

*Replying in group as your return address bounces my mail :( *

I've seen your posts...but..*THE AVAILABLE EVIDENCE STRONGLY SUGGESTS THAT
THE SCREEN IS THE CAUSE OF THE DAMAGE* which is why I haven't put/won't be
putting it up for sale. But you might want to risk Rob's screen if it gets
that far...

btw...I don't usually use screen savers either - I just wanted something

    Neil,
If for some reason you are ready to throw in the towel on this machine,
and
it is a 50 or 70ct, I need a screen, as my 50ct has a cracked one and is
working just fine otherwise. I am not trying to benefit from your
misfortune, but am just putting the word out to you, I am interested in
the
    screen.
Also, I am enjoying the updates on your dilema, and am interested in you
getting the little "bugger" to work properly!
    Keep up the posts!

PS - Years ago, I was told that the screen savers have caused a lot of
conflicts with other software, from modems and other communication
    software,
to drivers running properly. Since that time, 1995, after I lost two
hard
drives during my transition to Windows 95, I have never used
screensavers
again, except to view on a leisurely flight the special saver of my kids
photos. I never keep screen savers turned on, and have had very few
    problems
    since. FYI!

David,

I don't use 98 at all. This is from a 95 install disk which as far as I
remember I've successfully used before. But freqently it still doesn't even
boot...one hard disc spin up, then not even the backlights on the screen :(

I can't say for sure, your version being English, but I sure thought,
that after loading Win95 you needed to install Toshiba Win95 drivers
for the Video driver, the APM system ect. and If you didn't, you would
get at least some of the problems that you are getting. Wasn't Win95 the OS
that Microsoft would not let OEM change in anyway?

The crash on trying to come out of screen saver mode, sounds like a driver
problem, rather than a hardware problem. It ran all night ok, just switching
modes, (coming out of screen saver) caused a crash.

Perhaps it would be wise to boot to just DOS, and see how it behaves there
for a while? Go into the bios and make sure it's not trying (set to)to go
into hibernation or resume mode. And just run it for a while?
