David, I too have been guilty of not reporting back the exact sequence of
events that enabled me to use all 12GB so for the sake of posterity here it
goes...
I recently converted my 12GB drive from Windows 2000 to Win98SE. The BIOS
never saw the full 12GB and neither did Win98 or NT when I first installed
the 12GB drive. Win2k saw it and created the partitions without any
problems. When I reformatted c: and installed 98SE I left the other
partitions alone and consequently 98SE was able to utilize them as was
Partition Magic 5.0. I successfully modified the extended partitions using
PM but as soon as I tried to modify the primary partition and had to reboot
I lost the final 4GB even though I had data there! PM5 no longer saw the
12GB and even a full reinstall of everything failed to correct it.
Everything was using the new table. I eventually installed Linux on the
extra 4GB and had it recreate partitions in the extra space and rewrite the
table. On the next reboot into 98 PM5 saw the extra partitions and let me
blow them away and create an extended partition (fat32 obviously) and all
has been well since.
The moral of the story is to use something that doesn't care what the BIOS
tells it like Win2000 or Linux to create the table or at least the final 4GB
of the table and then never try to modify your primary partition after that.
After learning that, I fdisk'd and created my c: exactly as I wanted it the
first time and haven't touched it since and used Linux to create partitions
on the remainder of the drive so PM5 could be used to massage them into
fat32 partitions later. BTW, Partition Magic 4 (DOS version) also saw the
win2000/linux partitions but wouldn't let me modify them like PM5 did.
