See my site below for links.
Basically, they all run the CPU HALT instruction during periods when
the CPU is not doing anything, putting it into a lower power mode.
Win95/98 doesn't have this feature built-in. WinNT, 2K, Linux all have
this feature built-in so you don't need them with those OSs.
On a L50, gives you about 30 minutes more run time off a standard
battery; expect about the same with different Librettos.
Also, because it's in lower power mode, the CPU and Libretto run
cooler.
Doesn't hurt, works like a charm (and like it should, since Linux and
WNT/2K already has), takes up very little memory (esp. the smallest,
Russian made AMNHLT) and just gives you more for the buck.
AMNHLT is the best choice for those wanting install and forget -
there's nothing to indicate it's running, very small at 1KB and works.
CPUIDLE is good if you want to pay and get all those fluffy indicators
and all that tell you CPU speed, percent idle, etc., with on/off
control -- ie. nice, but more bloated. Rain and Waterfall do the same
thing.
Performance and battery life, naturally, are about the same with any of
these, so don't expect amazingly better results vs. the free AMNHLT at
all.
