Most L50 users have found that they can OC to 100Mhz w/o much trouble.
If you have an older model with the Pentium 75Mhz CPU, it will run
hotter than before, and for a few cause thermal shutdown trouble.
(My L50/J did run hotter, but never had any trouble at 100Mhz)
If you have a newer L50 with an underclocked 120Mhz CPU(they ran out of
75Mhz CPUs), then you can easily jump to 166Mhz as a few have done (eg.
Xing, see his web site linked from mine) becuase the 120Mhz CPU runs
cooler than the 75Mhz cpu at all speeds (and it's a small jump for the
120Mhz cpu to 166Mhz - only 46Mhz).
I'd say 90% success rate for most people who try oc'ing to 100Mhz.
Some of the things that will make it likely you succeed:
1) make sure the CPU heatsink is replaced properly, and with a thin
layer of thermal grease to ensure proper heat dissipation.
2) make sure you are comfortable opening the Libretto and making the
modification. eg. cut one pin for the 100Mhz OC; solider around tiny
surface mount components if you want the 166Mhz OC.
3) Run a cpuideling program like AMNHLT (also linked from my site) to
keep the CPU cool and to increase battery life (we've found that
running a CPU ideling program under W9x gets you around 30 extra
minutes of life on the standard battery)
4) Have a P120Mhz cpu -- this alone almost guarentees you'll be able to
go to at least 120Mhz w/o any problems, 166Mhz with few problems, if
any.
Naturally, with any such modification, you must expect total loss of
your Libretto -- there are no guarentees any of this will work!!!!
Thus, if you're not willing to take the risk, albeit low at 10-20%
failure, of losing your Libretto, don't OC.
However, if you're curious and want to achieve what many L50 users have
with their OC'd L50s, then go ahead, cautiously and slowly.
It took me about 30 minutes to OC my L50/J to 100Mhz. Most of the time
was taken up by looking at the various interesting components inside
the Libretto -- the acutal cutting of the pin only took 5-10 minutes
with a sharp knife.
