Subject: GPS, Libretto and moving map on a bicycle

I got dropped from the list but I am back;

I have endured not having a GPS with a background map for the length of time
that they were available. I use a Garmin II+ and a Libretto computer for
"moving map on a bicycle". However, I leaving the computer home for day
trips because of the extra weight on it and the 4 pounds of battery I carry
to get 8 hours of uses. Also the screen is hard to see in bright sun light
and the least bit of rain I at least turn it off.
I did get a eMap and will use it with the Libretto until I convince my self
to buy the Garmin maps and memory module.
I did make a data jack for the eMap, a picture is this web page. I will post
a drawing if anyone ask.

eMap data/power cable I made using my machine shop to machine the plastic
sliding jack. I used a Radio Shack's 12 volts reducer/regulator that has 6
voltages output with the last being 3 volts. I ran the ground, input and
output wires to a din plug, same as I use for quick change with my GPS II+.
I routed the cable through the regulator to a sliding jack the uses
"escutcheon pins" for contacts. The pins have a body diameter of 1.2 mm,
head diameter of 4.6 mm, head height of .9 mm and overall height of 2 mm. I
machined the plastic body to the slot size in the eMap. I milled a pocket so
that the head protrudes about. 1mm. I found that to use the cable for data
only, I should not insert the power pin. Apparently the presence of the pin
making contact cause a "External power loss, GPS will shut down unless any
key is pressed" alarm.
The unit puts out 4 volts and caused the eMap screen to blueout. I have to
get a regulator that holds the voltage to the +- .5 voltage that Joe
Mehaffey quoted. I remove the power pin and will use my device for date for
now. I have NiMh in the eMap that are rechargeable
