Double check to make sure AOL has dialup #s where you are going that'll let you access your US account. However, knowing that you will probably stay in a Hotel rather than a Hostel in Europe, you'll have ample access to modem ready phone lines, and I'd just bring the laptop instead if you do get a lot of email messages and if you hate to be w/o a real 'Net' connection for long like me. After all, it's far more convenient to be able to look up local maps, addresses, restaurants, reply to messages, buy things online, etc, etc. with a treal laptop than it is to do it on a Palm - where you are limited in screen size and transmission speed of the modem. naturally, far less you 'd have to buy and setup given that your laptop ois already capable of modeming and has all the software you need.
