I don't know *anything* about Linux.... but the times I've recovered a disk
from Linux and used the Linux fdisk, I've learned to put the whole drive
under one dos partition with the Linux fdisk.... because even tho dos *looks*
like it agrees with the Linux fdisk, as you have said elsewhere, looks are
deceiving.
I don't know why it doesn't work.... but I learned to not waste my time with
Linux fdisk in partitioning for dos.... I just do the partitioning with the dos
fdisk and reformat... and that does the trick.
The first time I tried this, I didn't use the Linux fdisk at all to put the drive
back to dos... just tried to fdisk with dos only.... BIG mistake! I thought the
drive was forever lost to Linux until I discovered using Linux fdisk to put it
back.

Or maybe it's 'Linux for you'... Maybe the Linux people who did the fdisk
program didn't bother with making it a 'true' dos at all, but just made it so
dos can then do its job.
And I enjoyed reading your *long, boring* story! It's interesting to read how
people struggle to conquer machines.... makes one wonder if 'they' are
really smarter than us after all... and enjoy seeing us struggle to get the
upper hand, if indeed we ever do :-)
